Root Canals

1. First Evaluation and Endodontic Tooth Preparation.

A small X-ray of the tooth is taken to check the tooth shape and root canal

Local anesthesia is administered

A canal is made in tooth to allow for removal of the damaged and/or infected tissue

2. Clean Root Canal

The root canal is cleaned and damaged and/or infected tissue is removed

In some cases, medication may be placed to treat infected tissue

3. Root Filling

After root canal is examined and cleaned, the root canal is filled

4. Post and Core

A post is cemented in the center of the tooth to strengthen the foundation.

Then a crown is custom made to fit over the post and tooth to provide protection

5. Post-Care and Follow-up

Your dentist will instruct you on any post-care tips pertaining to your root canal

Your dentist may schedule a follow-up appointment to check your tooth in a few days

For the first few days following a root canal, your tooth may feel sensitive due to natural tissue inflammation, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. This sensitivity or discomfort usually can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medications. Most patients can return to their normal activities the next day.
